Blog #20: Fonts

When it comes to horror movies there are only a few fonts that you can use in order to create the effect that the movie is in fact, scary. When choosing a font it is important that it as an edge to it and that it has a dramatic factor to it while not being too dramatic. Depending on the type of horror movie, would also help choose which font you would want to do. For example since our movie doesn’t have much blood then we wouldn’t use a “bloody” font. I did find some different horror fonts online and also from a picture which is posted below. Our group is still deciding on the font we would like to use but i’m sure this website and picture will help us in choosing.

Blog #19: Actors & Casting

Our group recently had a discussion about actors so I decided to write a blog on the actors in our film. We plan on having a female (or male even though we would prefer a female) who is a teenager and has good acting skills. We are currently in the process of finding an actor who can perfectly fit the role and make it believable.

One of the biggest aspects we need to take into consideration when casting is the person’s schedule. If they’re always busy then it wouldn’t make sense to have them act when we need them to. The actor needs to be able to film on the night of weekends where our group is planning to shoot. They must also have transportation to the filming location. Our actor should also have background knowledge on anxiety and schizophrenia so that they can more realistically fill the role.

Blog #18: Storyboard Development

Creating a storyboard is ideal when making a film even though they are very time consuming and require a lot of effort. While creating our storyboard, we didn’t have many issues in terms of development since we all discussed the camera shots we ideally wanted and drew out the basic scenery. One huge problem we had though was our lack of drawing skill. One person in our group was great at drawing while the rest of us were not. This ended up being an issue in splitting the work so we decided that the two best drawers would draw the scenes while the other two helped with planning the camera shots and the props. I was in charge of drawing the storyboard along with the other person who was good at drawing.

We decided to split it by one person doing the first half of the storyboards while the other does the other half. I ended up story boarding the second half of the movie. We all worked together to create the best storyboard we could make and I think it turned out pretty well. Even if our shots don’t work, we can always make revisions on shooting day. Here is a video on creating a storyboard which my group watched.

Blog #17: Significant Props

When establishing props in a movie, there are a few props when compared to the others which are more important and significant. In our case, the significant props mostly convey the movie genre and the main character. For example, we plan on having paintings on her walls which give an eerie effect to the setting since the paintings will be dark and creepy. This also ties to her character since she will be shown as an artist. Artists are usually shown as introverted and secretive as the stereotype.

Another prop which we plan to use has been mentioned before which is the anxiety meds bottle. This will be super important and shown directly in the film to show she has an anxiety disorder. In the youtube video below, they talk about how props are important in films and how they can either help a narrative or ruin it drastically.

Blog #16: Shooting Schedule

Making a shooting schedule is one of the most important parts in the filming process. This is the time where my group discusses the days we will film, plan, edit, and more. This may seem easy at first read, however, this will be pretty difficult for us. The main problem we have is our schedules and how different they are, even on the weekends. So in this case we need to find a day and alter our schedules in order to be able to film and edit.

Another issue we have is that only one person in our group has a driver’s license so we all need to get rides from people. We all decided that the best time we would be able to film is Fridays and Saturdays during the night hours. This is beneficial to us because our film is set at night time. As soon as it’s dark then we will head over to the house and film. I found a video on Youtube which talks about planning a film which involves the shooting schedule.

Blog #15: Changes To The Script

Once we turned in the script, we got a few pointers and tips to improve the script so that everything is neat and professional. The two major things we got were formatting issues and making things more specific. Our wording was a bit general and open ended so we want to fix it so everything is clear when we are filming. In terms of formatting issues, those are easy to fix it’s just changing the structure so that it fits the script requirements.

Blog #14: Group Dynamics

My group started off not knowing one another but as we continued to work on projects, we got closer which could be beneficial but also harmful. Since we are closer we tend to share and express ourselves better which could be very beneficial for combining ideas. One bad thing though is that we get too comfortable and end up messing around instead of actually doing the work. We also tend to get mad at eachother sometimes if something isn’t done right. I plan to help the group improve with these flaws so that in the end we can finish this project with a great score together. Teamwork is key.

Blog #13: Equipment List

Before filming a movie it is important to create a list of equipment you need to use in advance of filming. This is so that you have time to gather all the equipment needed to not worry about getting everything last minute. Here is a list of equipment we plan to use:

  1. Video camera
  2. Red gels to create saturated red lighting
  3. Different lights to create three-point lighting systems.
  4. Dead kitten
  5. Lavalier microphone
  6. Anxiety meds
  7. Cellphone
  8. Shovel
  9. Glass Cup for the water
  10. Mirror

Blog #12: Our First Draft

The first draft of our script is coming to end and and we have made a few changes in order to better suit our image. First of all, we decided to connect the idea of her nightmares and her mental health into one. This shows her struggles of anxiety through her nightmares which helps create the plot of the movie. This change ended up happening because one of our group members brought up that the original plan was too expected and cliche so we ended up changing that. From the start we didn’t want to me your average horror movie but instead make something with a more psychological factor. I believe this change will end up benefiting us in the future of filming.

Another change we made to the script was instead of her being in bed the whole time, she would go downstairs to get some water for example, and paranormal activities would happen to her. We want to make sure to use dutch angles and creepy noises so that the film gives off the horror vibe. This idea is still new to us so we will continue to work and develop on it.
