Blog #29: Filming and Editing Experience

Filming our final product was probably the hardest part of the whole process. Throughout the week we were experiencing difficulties with our group members where some couldn’t go on Zoom to film while others weren’t responding to texts or anything. We finally had a day to film our individual parts and our group parts after the mess. Our main actress could not film a large portion of the film at the end because of family reasons so we had to cut a large portion of the film out. A large part of the script was changed and altered so our working script had many changes to it. For filming I didn’t really have many parts since I was one of the side characters but it took me a while to film my part because of my family being too loud and my dogs barking. In the end though I pulled it off and was able to get my clip.

As always I was in charge of editing the movie. It was the most difficult to edit this film because of the lack of clips so I had to improvise and make my own clips with screen recordings and etc. I finished editing pretty quickly though and it was pretty challenging but I learned a lot.

Blog #26: Quarantined

Since last time I blogged, many things have changed drastically. Now me and my group have to make a brand new film from scratch about the quarantined life. We decided to keep to our original genre which was horror since we could use some of what we did with our old research and implement it here. Filming at home without my group was going to be difficult and a challenge for sure. We plan to use our time wisely and to meet up on zoom to discuss what we will do. The challenge now is the script and we will so be writing it. Our film will mostly be online so we want to incorporate the online factor as part of our movie since in quarantine everything has moved to online.

Blog #25: Schizophrenia Research

I decided to do some research on schizophrenia since our actress in the movie needs to portray the role of someone who has the disorder. People with schizophrenia deal with many symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, chaotic behavior, and anxiety. This is why we plan on our main character seeing hallucinations while she is going downstairs from her perspective. We can also make the main antagonist of the movie be a huge hallucination however, we are still talking about that currently. People with this disorder have a huge issue with telling what is real to what is fake. They might also get exaggerated ideas. This is why in the movie our character will be confused and be unable to tell the real to the fake.

Another symptom of schizophrenia is withdraw so we plan on showing her having a disconnection to humans since no other people will be shown in the movie and there will be no picture frames of people in the film. Back to the hallucinations, a form of hallucination is audio based which is why a huge key element in our movie will have whispers in her head. While my group is still researching this mental disorder, we plan to watch more videos and read more articles to get the perfect image of schizophrenia in our movie. Here is a video I watched while researching which helped me come up with a lot of these ideas:

Blog #24: Editing Research

The first thing that my group discussed when we started this project was who would focus on which aspect of the film. The role I was given to take charge of was the editing. Editing is one of if not the most important steps in creating a film. Without editing, there would be clips that are too long and random cuts everywhere. There could be huge audio mistakes or visual mistakes everywhere. There wouldn’t be a credits screen or any special effects. Imagine a movie being filmed without editing, it would be a complete disaster.

Editing brings out the emotion in a movie and helps the mise en scene. When I edit after we film, I plan to hopefully used Filmora if I have my dad’s laptop but if not I can use IMovie and other options too. For now I am still researching some good free options. I found an article about the importance of editing in film making.

Blog #23: Issues With Actors

Recently we have been trying to find an actor for our movie since we plan to film soon. However, we couldn’t find anyone who can fit the role while also having an open schedule during the weekends we want to film. This has been a major issue until yesterday we discussed about it and concluded that one of our group members would be our actress. This may affect our filming since some of our roles will have to be switched around but hopefully this will be the last resort and we will find another actor.

Blog #22: Music Research

Music is one of the most important elements in creating a movie. It can either ruin the film and make it unprofessional or it can improve the mise en scene. Our genre which is a horror movie, requires a specific type of sound in order to create the perfect scene. In my research I discovered that the two key elements in choosing movie for a horror film are dissonant sounds and minor chords. Using these distorted and unfamiliar types of sounds can help create suspense and uneasiness in the audience. An example would be a high-pitched violin sound which is used in various horror films such as Psycho.

Another highly effective technique that filmmakers would use is called “infrasound” which is “a low-frequency sound that’s at a pitch below the range of human hearing (which is around 20 Hz)”. This sound is shown to cause anxiety and shivering. This sound is very effective for creating tension in a scene. In the end, it is our goal to create the perfect blend of sounds and music to create the perfect horror film.

Blog #21: Plans For The First Shoot

Recently our group was discussing the day which we could first start filming. Three of us wanted to start this weekend however, we had to postpone because the other member was going on vacation. Ideally, we agreed to meet up the following weekend which would be in about six days from when this is posted. We also talked about what we would do when we arrived at the house.

We decided that we would film at one of our group member’s house which was an ideal location for the film. It has all the requirements we needed for the layout for example, the stairs. When we get there we will set up the scene so that all the elements are into play and we can set up all the equipment. For now that is just what we talked about but soon we will discuss further plans on the first filming day.
