Blog #22: Music Research

Music is one of the most important elements in creating a movie. It can either ruin the film and make it unprofessional or it can improve the mise en scene. Our genre which is a horror movie, requires a specific type of sound in order to create the perfect scene. In my research I discovered that the two key elements in choosing movie for a horror film are dissonant sounds and minor chords. Using these distorted and unfamiliar types of sounds can help create suspense and uneasiness in the audience. An example would be a high-pitched violin sound which is used in various horror films such as Psycho.

Another highly effective technique that filmmakers would use is called “infrasound” which is “a low-frequency sound that’s at a pitch below the range of human hearing (which is around 20 Hz)”. This sound is shown to cause anxiety and shivering. This sound is very effective for creating tension in a scene. In the end, it is our goal to create the perfect blend of sounds and music to create the perfect horror film.
