Marxist Theory Research (12/8/2019)

The Marxist Theory is one out of many important thories in Film and life in general. Being one of the oldest, it is still highly praised by many film critics in the industry and is applied in more films than anyone could think of. This theory basically states that films ate influinced by the political trends of a dictator and communist methods. Most of the time the smaller ruling class will overtake the larger ruling class. For example when the townspeople take over the king of the kingdom that would be an example of Marxism. This theory was introduced by Karl Marx (hence why the name is MARXIST theory). It came about in film from the frustration of the basic hollywood narrative and is now a popular use among filmmakers. I learned that this theory is much more prevelant in films than I could have imagined.

The film that we chose which represents tjis theory is K-12 by Melanie Martinez. Being a small indie film it was only aired in a few select theatres for a mere one day. The purpose pf this film was mostly to promite her newest album since it is a musical but there is a much darker meaning to this film than you think. The story takes place in a fictional world where the main character is a student in this school full of students who are under the control of the principle and are trying to escape. The Marxist Theory was shown when the students end up killing the principle to show the lowerclass overthrowing the higher class. In the end, the Marxist Theory is one of the many important theories in film but is personally my favorite that I have learned so far!
